A Glance at Discussion-Based Teaching in Genetics Class
From: CIE Teaching Affairs Office      By: Jing Jiaxian & Ma Chuan      Date: 2016-04-05

The reform in innovative talents cultivation requires associating exploration and practice in inquiry-based and discussion-based teaching methods. On March 28th, the class observers witnessed the great success of this trial in Genetics Class conducted by Mr. Ma Lingjian in classroom N8602.

In this discussion-based class, the traditional teacher-centered teaching gave its way to the new teaching model---Topic+Exploration+Presentation+Discussion. Students were asked to work in groups of 3-5, and worked on the research background of three renowned scientists---Charles Darwin, Gregor Mendel and Craig Venter. Starting with the literature review of topic-related information, the students were familiarized with knowledge of bio-science and research methods. The labor division allowed them more time to focus on certain part of team work. Then they sorted out the group discussion materials before they did their class presentation. The learning process intrigued students greatly in their discipline and helps them set clear goal of academic development. Mr. Ma drew out the students in class to voice their ideas. The exchange of ideas prevailed in group discussion, listening, commenting and inquiring, which greatly activate the class atmosphere.
