CIE Exploring New Admission Mode
From: Student Affairs Office      By: Yin Boyan      Date: 2017-11-06

On October 29th, 45 students and teachers from Xianyang Jinggan Middle School visited NWAFU to experience first-hand the university life. By visiting the campus, laboratories, and university Museum Garden, and attending science lectures and experiencing activities in Youren College, the guests tasted the university life and had the opportunity communicate with academic experts.

Broaden students’ horizons and stimulate their interest

The guests arrived at the Museum Garden at 9am. Dean Ou Wenjun of CIE accompanied the tour. The guests appreciated various insects and rare animals; they also learnt about the history of agricultural development, the development of the “Belt and Road”, and the evolution of biology. Zhang Ao from Jinggan Middle School said, “The Museum Garden possesses so many rare specimens that I have never seen before. This visit expands my horizon and inspires me to learn more about agriculture.”

Experience cutting-edge technology and develop innovation ability

At 1pm, Pei Zhichao – deputy secretary of party general branch of CIE, showed the the guests to Biochip Laboratory and Carbohydrate Biochemistry Laboratory. Scientific researchers in the laboratories introduced the advanced equipment and latest researches. Pei Zhichao also gave lectures to the student guests. By sharing his personal experience of taking education abroad, he encouraged the students to develop international perspective and innovation ability in daily study, and always cherish patriotic thoughts and feelings to the country.

Appreciate campus view and experience college life

At the end of the tour, the guests visited Youren College where dean Ou Wenjun introduced the development of Youren College. The guests also learnt about Mr. Yu Youren’s life stories and the school motto of “staying scholarly virtue, and bettering knowledge and behavior”.

Vice president Xu Pengchang from Jinggan Middle School said, “This visit greatly expanded our students’ horizons and increased their interest in science and technology. Also, their long-standing deficiency of agriculture and forestry studies has been rectified. This first-hand experience at NWAFU not only stimulates the students’ study interest; it will also provide reference when they file the intention for university.” Su Yan from Jinggan Middle School said, “This trip refreshed my expectation for college life and deepened my understanding of NWAFU. I am looking forward to my college life!”

Ever since the admission work was launched in Xianyang, CIE leaders have been making the most of the geography advantage and developing new methods for promoting student admission. “Previously, we only organized teach-ins at middle schools during which staff from the admission committee introduced admission policy and entry requirement. The dry lectures and the absence of participations, as a result, limited the admission effect. The new ‘bring-in’ mode emphasizes “experience”, which is a necessary supplement to the previous ‘going-out’ policy. It fully demonstrates the university’s soft strength and infrastructure construction, and bridges the gap between middle school and university", Ou Wenjun commented.

This new mode received strong support from the university’s admission office. CIE’s creative exploration brings new experience to middle school students, and strengthens the communication and cooperation between secondary education and higher education.
