Integrate Individual Development with National Economy and the People’s Livelihood – Prof Fan Mingtao Gave Report to CIE Students

On March 7th, Professor Fan Mingtao from College of Food Science and Engineering gave a report to CIE Grade 2016 students under the theme of “College of Food Science and Engineering and Introduction to Relevant Research”.

Before the report, CIE vice dean Wang Xiaoping introduced Prof Fan’s background and research interests to the students and expressed welcome and gratitude for Prof Fan’s participation.

“Whether in poverty alleviation or in life quality improvement, the food study and relevant disciplines will play a vital role.” Prof Fan said that the value increase brought by agricultural product processing and the growing percent of processed cereals stimulated by the new technologies have brought considerable income to the poverty-stricken population in the rural areas. Secondly, the food industry in China is currently transforming from the subsistence level to health and nutrition orientation. In the context of fast life pace and people’s urgent need of convenient food, there are still many problems to be solved in food studies.

Prof Fan also introduced College of Food Science and Engineering in terms of course structure, core knowledge, and faculty members’ research interest such as agricultural product processing and value increase, development and exploration of functional food, quick identification of harmful chemical substance of functional factor, and four other aspects. He also discussed the prospect of food related area based on the current status and relevant policies in China.

In response to the students’ questions on major and supervisor selection, Prof Fan provided many practical advices and encouraged the students that “nothing is too difficult if you are hard-working”. Prof Fan’s abundant professional experience and detailed explanations aroused rounds of applauses among the students.

This report not only deepened the students’ understanding about food science and engineering helped them see the responsibilities and significance of food engineering and food safety, but also strengthened their faith in scientific research.
