Exploring the Genetic Code of Modern Agriculture
From: Student Affairs Office      By: Chen Xuanyi & Wang Xing      Date: 2017-10-31

“Carambola contains abundant oxalic acid. If eaten too much, it will form calcium oxalate and result in the runaway of calcium.”

On the afternoon of October 25th, Students of Class 2 and Class 3 of Grade 2017 visited the Innovation Park of Yangling Modern Agricultural Demonstrative Zone under the guidance of Dean Ou Wenjun and Instructor Miao Yuyang.

Students visited Soilless Cultivation Hall, South Fruit Tree Hall, West China Hall, and Super Vegetable Garden. In the Soilless Cultivation Hall, students were surprise by the latest soilless cultivation modes including hydroponics, substrate culture, and aeroponics. In the Super Vegetable Garden, the guide introduced the purpose of the garden, “We aim to exploit the development potentials of vegetables. Here we demonstrate super yield, extended growth cycle, super height, etc.” Students also raised their questions and curiosities.

Dean Ou Wenjun said, “In the new stage of life, you must come down to earth and develop conscientious learning attitude in college. Whether it is visiting trip or future study, you must endeavor to find questions and cultivate critical thinking so as to become a qualified CIE student.”

“I ate these fruits before, but had no idea what the fruit tree looked like. It is the first time that I see the branch of dragon fruit tree, which is so similar to cactus. I also see with my eyes what used to appear in books or conversations, as well as the super vegetables which embody the latest biotechnologies. This visit is beneficial. Advanced technologies and various fruits and vegetables give me a new understanding of modern agriculture,” Liu Zeming from Biotechnology 1703 said.

Dean Ou and all the students took group photo at the landmark stone to mark the occasion.

This event gave the students an opportunity to step outside classroom and experienced firsthand the charm of modern agriculture, which should contribute to their horizons.
