Publishing SCI Papers? It Is Not That Difficult
From: Student Affairs Office      By: Zhao Xuan      Date: 2018-06-19

In order to deepen students' understanding of scientific research, enhance the quality of scientific research and cultivate a love of science, Li Jie, an outstanding student of the Innovation Experimental College and one of the 2018 “Top Ten Graduates”, brought a report of "How Do Experiment Novice Publish SCI Papers” on June 15th in the multimedia classroom at the first floor of the college.

Li Jie, from Class 141 of Bio-innovation, was recommended for successive postgraduate and doctoral study in the Animal Science and Technology College of NWAFU, studying Animal Genetics, Breeding and Reproduction under Professor Lan Xianyong from the animal genomics and gene function research team.

Scientific Planning

First of all, Li Jie introduced her busy but fulfilling university life: being brave to try as a freshman --- joining the yoga community, the etiquette team, the student union and the laboratory; being diligent in practice as a sophomore --- applying for a technological innovative project and serving as the assistant to the village director without leaving the professional study behind; attaching importance to accumulation as a junior --- studying professional courses in depth and participating in relevant competition; furthering the study as a senior --- studying postgraduate courses to lay a solid foundation for more in-depth study besides learning experimental skills and participating in the competition. Li Jie emphasized the importance of a future plan as an old saying goes “in all things, success lies in previous preparations and there will be failure without previous preparations”, which is often mentioned by Professor Lan Xianyong, encouraging everyone to plan for the university life as early as possible.

Thesis Writing

The next part of the report is about what, why and how of publishing SCI papers, familiarizing students with SCI (Science Citation Index) and the access to the literature. The reasons for publishing SCI papers, said by Li Jie, lie in “showing your own experimental skills and improving your English and thesis writing, the necessary skills for scientific research”. “It is not only a passport to postgraduate recommendation, competition and overseas study, but also a strong proof of talent introduction in universities and research institutions." Then, Li Jie detailed the process of publishing SCI papers into selecting the questions, searching the materials, selecting the journals and publishing with the example of her first experience of publishing on Prion. In the end, she summed up her suggestions for students: clear goals, plan early, develop comprehensively and cherish time.

This report is of great guiding significance for students who are preparing to start research. An Zhengyang, from Class 1602 of Biotechnology, praised: "The report equips me with a better  and comprehensive understanding of the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the process of writing, modifying and submitting the paper.” Hei Yueyu, from Class 1602 of Biotechnology, believed that this report benefited him with a clearer goal for career planing and a clearer plan for university life.
