By August 4, the online selection in preliminary and semi-finals period of the 5th National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Life Science for College Students that started from July 1 has finally brought to a successful close. Among the 22 entries with students from the College in charge, 14 of them carried off a prize (13 from the innovation group and 1 from the entrepreneurship group). Pleasingly, the project “Fluorescent Sensors Fabricated with Functionalized Nanoscale Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Determination of Tetracyclines Antibiotics in Milk” led by Zhang Xiaoshuo, a fourth-year student from the College, was chosen one of the finalists contending for the grand prize. For the rest of 13 projects, 3 of them won the first prize, 4 won the second prize and 6 won the third prize. Compared to the 4th Competition, the participation rate and award rate of the students from the College showed a noticeable increase.
The National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in Life Science for College Students is not only of national level in the competitions of life science, but also an influential discipline competition for subjects related to life science. This year, the competition was sponsored by Ministry of Education’s Steering Committee on the Teaching of Biotechnology and Bioengineering in Higher Educational Institutions, Ministry of Education’s Steering Committee on the Teaching of Food Science and Engineering in Higher Educational Institutions, National Demonstration Center for Experimental education in Higher Educational Institutions, and the Editorial Office of Biology Teaching in University. It aimed at further inspiring the reform and innovation in the practice teaching of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in higher education institutions all over the country. By providing a platform for life science majors to exchange their ideas and display works of scientific and technological innovation, the activity helped promote the public awareness and spirit of innovation, bringing a vigorous development of scientific and technological innovation activities for college students and cultivating outstanding talents in this field.
Participating in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions is a major channel for undergraduates to improve their practical capacity of innovation and entrepreneurship. In response to the mass entrepreneurship and innovation initiative, the College pays high attention to cultivating students’ innovative consciousness and research capability. It has formed a sophisticated training system on these abilities covering the whole undergraduate period, which consists of independent experiments, scientific innovative projects, the scientific research training under the guidance of tutors, and the graduation thesis project. In this way, the College equips undergraduates with basic scientific research skills and encourages them to take active part in innovation and entrepreneurship competitions with these skills applied, which lays a solid foundation for their future research study.
