| From Feb 21st to 25th of 2011, Professor W.J.M.Heijman from Wageningen University, according to the teaching syllabus in third phase of Honors Students Program of Wageningen University and Our University, came to our university and gave series of lectures to Economic Management majors on topic of Spatial and Regional Economics. The students present are mainly junior and senior undergraduate students from College of Innovative Experiment, College of Economic Management and College of Humanities. Intensive as the classes were, Professor Heijman impressed the student with his rich professional knowledge, unique personal charm and advanced teaching.
The foreign teacher offered the students the original textbook he compiled for pre-class preparation. In the textbook, all the terms of theory and notions were informative and descriptive with the illustration of abundant and vivid diagrams and tables. In addition, the students had access to the website designed for extracurricular study if they login for the reference information of the textbook and some teaching material of Wageningen University. As supplementary to curriculum teaching, the website provided sufficient teaching resource, to help students extend their horizon and explore best method for self study.
In his class, the interaction between teacher and students were highly valued, manifested by frequent use of question-and-answer class activities for solution to some questions. Besides, the foreign teacher emphasized the application of method, but not the arithmetic capability of figures. Namely, the math software was required to use in the calculation of Third-order matrix determinant.
Each unit was associated with well designed quiz as a stimuli to make the knowledge acquired and comprehended better by the students, as well as an evaluation dimension to assess the teaching and learning efficiency.
In Regional Economics classes, Professor W.J.M.Heijman often involved some economic issue in discussion. For instance, the inflation and economic crisis are common topics in class, which enriched students knowledge and enhance their interest in Economics.
More attractive the classes were, illustrative body language and occasional humour not only liven the atmosphere, but also improved the teaching efficiency.
Though one-week foreign teaching was over, students will never lose their passion in learning Regional Economics owing to the impressive and unique teaching method, which definitely enables more opportunities for improving their independent ability in thinking and extending their international view.
