On Sep. 19th, CIE held English Speaking Contest for preliminary of the 15th NWAFU English Speaking Contest for College Students. In the college multi-media classroom, 14 contestants demonstrated their excellence in public speaking. Mz. Nan Xinrong, Mz. Li Ting and Mr. Xiang Jun from NWAFU Department of Foreign Languages were invited as judges. CIE Party Secretary Mz. Li Haihua, CIE Associated Dean Mr. Wang Xiaoping and dozens of CIE students were present at the event.
The contest involves two parts---a 3-minute impromptu speech on topic the contestant picked randomly and 1 minute Q&A session. Though only 20 minutes allowed for preparation, the contestants all finished their job brilliantly. Their speeches were more than passionate and persuasive. Last, Li Ziyou and Chen Meijie won the first prize and would take part in the NWAFU contest as CIE representatives. The judges then made instructive comments on the performance of all contestants.
Mz. Li Haihua pointed out in the closing speech that she was proud of all students who stood on the stage and voiced their ideas. They were so quick-minded and expressive, who offered the audience great competition with their high language proficiency and rational ideas. English is as important as any professional courses to the students. Self-directed learning, English learning club, English-based activities and competitions and communication with English teachers are highly recommended. To go in for various professional competitions will be very helpful to improve the students’ abilities.
