On the afternoon of Oct. 21st, Executive Dean of Cuiying Honors College, Lanzhou University, Mr. Xu Pengfei was invited to give a report on development of comprehensive quality to hundreds of CIE students. Mr. Xu showed the audience how a talent with innovative spirit is made out of an average student.
Prof. Xu is an experienced educator holding concurrent posts of Associated Dean of College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lanzhou University, Council Member of Chinese Chemical Society, Standing Director of Science Association of Higher Education. Four topics covered in his speech were Teaching and Educational Philosophy, Development and Research Policy, Significance of English Learning and Individual Academic Plan. “English learning is an accelerator to discipline development,” Mr. Xu stressed the importance of English in his encouraging speech, “The accelerator will enable the students more competitive on the international arena”. Mr. Xu shared his experience in promoting the cultivation model, to set up a student profile database in terms of talent cultivation model, improvement of teaching profession, research ability training and international collaboration program.
Mr. Xu was also very responsive to the questions raised by the student audience, encouraging them to be diligent in thinking, brave to explore and down-to-earth in study. By the principle of uniting knowledge and action, the student will persistently make their contributions to our nation, society and our country.
The report successfully fulfilled the expectation of familiarizing the students with new thoughts and methods of comprehensive quality development. Mr. Xu’s remarks on individual development plan to the students were what a compass to sailors. In addition, the experience of Cuiying Honors College in top-notch innovative talents cultivation is very valuable to the development of CIE and Youren College.

Xu Pengfei, male, was born in Qianxian County of Shaanxi Province, China. He is now a Professor of Lanzhou University, Doctoral Supervisor, and Executive Director of Cuiying Honors College, Lanzhou University. He graduated from Department of Chemistry, Lanzhou University with Bachelor’s Degree in 1987, Master’s Degree in Organic-Chemistry in 1994 and Doctoral Degree in 1998. From 2003-2004, he studied in Nagoya University, Japan, as a visiting scholar. Once served as Associate Dean of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering College, and Director of Academic Affairs Division of Lanzhou University. He is now holding concurrent posts of Council Member of Chinese Chemical Society, Standing Director of Science Association of Higher Education. Professor Xu has chaired and finalized “973” project, Key Special Projects of Gansu Province, key projects of MOE and projects sponsored by National Natural Science Fund. He published over 150 academic papers on Acc. Chem. Res., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem. Commun., Chem. Eur. J., Org. Lett. and many other international academic journals and was authorized 4 patents. He has been selected into the “555” innovative talents project of New Century Talent Supporting Project by MOE, and has been titled Leading Talent of Gansu Province and Excellent Educator of Gansu University, and winner of Government Special Allowance.
