On May 13th, CIE held the Y2017 graduates thesis pre-defense in which 165 students of 22 different majors who are to graduate this year attended the event. As one of the crucial factors in improving the quality of talents cultivation, the theses defense has been attached great importance in evaluating students’ master of fundamental theories and research methods and their practical and analytic abilities. It is also an effective way in assessing students’ comprehensive qualities and innovative competence.

The respondents were required to give a 5-minute presentation and take a 5-minute defense. In accordance with their research fields, the students were divided into five groups whose panel respectively were 5 professors from different colleges.

It was conspicuous that all the students were quite well-prepared. Their report covered the research has been completed, the significance of their research, the object and content, the research methods, data and innovation of their thesis. Among the evaluation criteria, thesis’s structure, logic and rationale are major items. In addition to the restrict review, the judges put forward instructive suggestions in terms of thesis writing, format, analysis of research findings and other elements. The students were quite open to the advice and took notes for refinement of their thesis.

The students showed that they have benefited much from this activity through which they found out the improvement to be made for their thesis and have them be more prepared for the final defense.
