On the afternoon of Sep. 13th, CIE had a group of honorable visitors---a delegate of 13 experts led by Dean of College of Agronomy Shan Weixing. This visit was for the information session on agronomy research for the Y2014 CIE students. The experts are Prof. Li Jun, Prof. Wang Zhonghua, Prof. Hu Shengwu, Prof. Ji Wanquan, Prof. Xue Jiquan, Prof. Song Weining, Prof. Chen Qin, Prof. Han Qingfang, Prof. Chen Xinhong, Prof. Han Dejun, Prof.Min Donghong, Prof. Li Xuejun and Prof. Xi Yajun.
Focusing on the biotechnology and genetic breeding research, Prof. Ji Wanquan introduced his research orientation and team. He then shared his empirical study findings and achievements made through co-research with experts in China, America, Canada, Mexico and Japan.
On genetic technology and crop-breeding-improvement, Prof. Wang Zhonghua introduced the how the molecular synthesis mechanism of epicuticular wax and clone technology’s regulating change the color of tomato’s fruit. Prof. Wang also introduced the frontier development of crop drought resistance, clone and MAS technology.
In the field of dry-land Eco-agriculture and crop-system simulation research, Prof. Li Jun displayed the soil and water conservation technology and the base construction of hillside fields, silt dams, non-arable land, gully and hills in arid and semi-arid region of northwest China. He also encouraged the CIE students to join his research team.
Next, Prof. Shan Weixing introduced the development and influence of NWAFU agronomy discipline in recent years. Selection breeding of over 90 new wheat varieties has been achieved and applied to 1.8 billion mu, making significant contribution for the national food supply and safety. This discipline of NWAFU now is playing a internationally leading role in the research of wheat heterosis, dry farming and minor crops. Facility for plant root system research, with proprietary intellectual property rights, has been included in the Encyclopaedia of American soil science in 2015. As the initiator, we co-established the world-class “Wheat Biology Innovation Platform” with China Agricultural University and Huazhong Agricultural University. Three journals founded and run by NWAFU’s agronomy discipline--Journal of Triticeae Crops, Agricultural Research in the Arid Areas, Acta Agriculturae Boreali-Occidentalis Sinica provided an important communication platform for the discipline development.
The CIE students were greatly inspired by the speeches given by the experts. They showed their great interest in this discipline and their eagerness for join the research teams. In the Q&A session, questions raised by the students about the personal development in career and academic research flooded to the experts.
Last, CIE Dean Ou Wenjun extended sincere thanks to the experts for their encouraging and informative reports. He encouraged the CIE students to adhere to and practice the university motto of Sincerity, Simplicity, Bravery and Perseverance in their life and study, to make contribution to NWAFU’s construction of Double First-Rate University.
