On the evening of November 24th, Sun Qiang – senior engineer and director of Non-human Primate Facility in Institute of Neuroscience, Chinese Academy of Sciences – gave an academic lecture themed on the Model Animal of Non-human Primates to the students of Innovation Experimental College.
Sun Qiang has been dedicated to mode animal construction and technology research and development, and he has plentiful experience in experimental animal and mammal transgenic technology. His major research cynomolgus monkey, which he conducts most of his researches in, is one of the main non-human primate models and plays a very important role in the field of life science and biomedicine. Sun Qiang started the academic lecture with the development history of transgenic animals, and on the basis of the transgenic mouse model process, he elaborated on the difficulties and solutions of the preparative technique of transgenic monkey. In addition, Sun Qiang shared his experience of working on the hillside for 4 years in Xishuangbanna and eventually cultivating the first cynomolgus monkeys in vitro in China. From the viewpoint of a researcher, he talked about his understanding of research work and suggested the student audiences reading cutting-edge papers which should be helpful to professional development and English proficiency.
The audience raised questions actively after the lecture. Chang Xiao from Class Biotech 1604 proposed that choosing female monkey’s egg cell of instead of male monkey’s sperm might be an easier way to deal with cynomolgus monkey’s low productivity. In response, Sun Qiang elaborated on the female monkey’s certain vibration during the specific physiological period.
The lecture expanded the students’ horizon and helped them know better about the scientific research work. The knowledge and work ethic they gained from the lecture will be helpful to their future study.
