To put open teaching activity into practice and accelerate the reform of teaching approach, on the morning of November 17th, Class Biotech 1701 had an open observation class. 

Aiming to improve students’ practical English knowledge and oral English competence, course instructor Li Ting adopted English drama performance as the way of teaching. Students were free to choose team members as well as the drama and character, which allowed them to practice and innovate in a broader room. Students’ team spirit and interpersonal communication also received improvement from the preparation. 

Students’ excellent performances enlivened the class atmosphere. The presented dramas included A Chinese Odyssey, Zootopia, The Little Prince, Monkey King Beating the Evil Spirit of the Bones of the Dead Three Times, and Golden Axe and Silver Axe, for which students devoted themselves to the characters and made full preparations in terms of stage property, music, and PowerPoint slide. At the end of the class, Ms. Li Ting marked and commented on the students’ performance based on their language and action. 

Zhou Yaqi from Class Biotech 1701 said, “Testing students’ oral English through English drama is a new way for me. I think this form can stimulate our interest in learning and never feel bored during the class. Teaching activities like this embody instruction and entertainment. I enjoy it quite a lot.” 

College English is one of the basic courses for every undergraduate student. CIE has endeavored to develop students’ innovation ability, practical English proficiency, and oral English skills. This interactive teaching approach is proved to be useful to increase students’ overall English competence and their learning interest.
