Wu Yan pointed out in the report First-class Undergraduate Education and First-class Discipline Develop First-class Talents that higher education in China has overall entered the middle-upper level worldwide, yet the six key aspects, i.e. giving good guidance, promoting fairness, optimizing the structure, encouraging innovation, and emphasizing quality culture, should be adhered to in the practice. In the process of constructing powerful nation in terms of higher education, first-class university is the objective, first-class discipline is the condition, first-class undergraduate education is the foundation, and first-class discipline is the base. These four “first-classes” should be coordinated. Classroom education has always been the major way for talent development, yet traditional classroom teaching in China’s higher education institutions still have obvious shortcomings. The Ministry of Education aims to launch student-oriented curricula reform and teaching reform and achieve rapid development of higher education in China. To attain this objective, identifying the first national online open courses will be taken as the opportunity, and full promotion of constructing and applying online open courses will be used as the tool. Modernized education technologies will be put to promote the modernization of higher education. Also, the integration of information technology with education and teaching will be deepened.
After the keynote speech, the forum was divided into three branches according to the topic. Key teachers from Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Sun Yat-Sen University, etc. shared their teaching experiences, results of teaching reform, and their reflections on exploration. CIE representatives said that they benefited a lot from this forum, and that it was important for higher education paid attention to classroom education again. CIE will grasp the key of first-class teaching by providing better teaching environment for front-line teachers and supporting them to reform teaching methods. Geng Huiling from College of Chemistry & Medicine said, first-class undergraduate education is the foundation of constructing first-class universities and disciplines; first-class class is the key to practice first-class undergraduate education; teachers are the practitioners in first-class teaching. Therefore, teachers should adhere to their job responsibilities and the idea of student orientation. Every class should be made full use of and every knowledge should be clarified. Teachers should also care every student and inspire them to achieve success.
