On the morning the January 2nd, CIE held the open class of Linear Algebra Ⅱ in the college multimedia classroom for year 2016 students. Professor Liu Yaxiang conducted the class activity with the aid of assistant teacher Wu Mengjie.
The class was composed of pre-class group discussion, PPT-aided presentation and teachers’ review. Students chose their own research directions from more than ten topics, such as Magic Square and Linear Algebra, Linear Algebra’s application in sausage recipe, population migration model, biological genetics, logistics and transportation problems, etc.. The students were required to do literature review, analyze the and work out answers to the chosen topics with linear algebra knowledge before presenting their work in class.
The report by Yuan Hongyu from Class 1601 was The Application of Linear Algebra in the Model of Population Migration. First, they got onto the subject from the background of current situation of China's population migration. After reviewing the related knowledge of linear algebra, they employed the methods of finding eigenvalues and eigenvectors to tackle the questions, and finally concluded and extended the selected topics.
The reports by other groups were equally distinctive not only for their interesting content and form but also for more realistic research value. Assistant teacher Wu Mengjie commented: “ It is brilliant that the students are able to apply the linear algebra knowledge to solve practical problems. Some groups have done thorough research on their selected topics, while some pay more attention to the interaction with classmates. I hope that students will continue their innovation and exploration, to enrich knowledge and broaden horizons for further improvement in research steps and optimization of research methods.
This open teaching activity once again motivated students in study independently, enriching the cooperation experience in team research, which has far-reaching significance to the future scientific research of students.
