From: Educational Administration Office      By: Gao Yang & Ma Chuan      Date: 2018-05-07

Students from Biotechnology Base Class 1701 of Innovation Experimental College joined the spoken class of College English Ⅳ taught by Chigan Menghua from Department of Foreign Languages in multimedia interactive classroom 404, Building 7 at 2:30 pm on April 3rd, 2018.

The class was divided into two parts. The first part was English Speech with the theme of Impromptu Speech. Teacher Chigan first led students to review the skills, steps and precautions of the impromptu speech learned in the previous class. Afterwards, she distributed random speech topics to each student of the 1st and 2nd groups. Everyone, with five minutes for conceiving and preparing for the syllabus, addressed the whole classmates in the front of the classroom. The rest students graded the overall performance of their classmates. After the speech, students actively expressed their opinions. Teacher Chigan also gave her comments, pointing out the highlights and deficiency of students’ speeches. All students affirmed the beneficial effects of the impromptu speech part. Distinct from previous lecture classes which provide one-week preparation time and allow prepared drafts, this class, with five-minute preparation time and no drafts, dramatically enhanced students’ English organization ability and their psychological quality.

The next part is Speaking for Communication. Students discussed the given topic in groups  before writing relevant dialogues with self-setting scenes and the sentence patterns mentioned before, and then communicated in pairs through role-playing. During the ten-minute preparation, students were involved in heated discussion and active expression. Ten minutes later, each group sent representatives to conduct the dialogue. Each dialogue is well-prepared for its rich content and skillful use of the learned patterns.

Teacher Chigan commented the dialogues of each group. Through this kind of dialogue, students developed their interest in learning English and absorbed the new knowledge in a subtle manner, effectively improving their English language ability.
