The third session of English class in Life Science and Organic Chemistry of CIE summer term has successfully concluded. In order to enhance the quality of the curriculum, our college introduced classroom lectures, group discussions, online feedback, English test papers, debriefings, and written summaries.
The lecturer Andrea Renzetti received double doctoral degrees in pharmacology from the University of Chieti in Italy and the University of Reims in France. He has been teaching and doing researches at universities in Italy, France, Canada, Japan, and United Kingdom, and working as a visitor scholar at Cambridge University in the UK for 2 years. According to the teaching plan, Professor Wang Junru and other teachers of teaching team exchanged ideas with the foreign teacher as to the talent training requirements, teaching content, teaching methods and assessment requirements.
Before each class, the foreign teachers had assigned reaching tasks in advance, requiring the student to read the relevant foreign literature and generalize the main ideas. He would then explain the main reaction lines according to the materials, integrating the lecture with several times of group discussion and questioning. His teaching encourages the students to put forward their own views and prospects for the application of the organic response in life sciences. At the seminar, the students shared their learning and experience in fluent English, indicating that the course study improved their ability to speak and read English literature, and hoped to continue with more similar courses.
Compared with the previous two rounds, this round of teaching has added on-site pre-reading, English test paper test, topic voting, and multi-channel feedback, enriching the teaching process, strengthening interaction, and helping to further improve learning initiative. Many feedbacks show that the students benefited profoundly than expected, and they have strengthened their lofty aspirations for professional research in life sciences, which has enhanced their understanding of the role of organic chemistry in the future research of life science.
Dr. Andrea Renzetti also gave a report titled "New Anticancer Drug Discovery: Research Experience and the Social Challenge" to the CIE students.
