From: Students Affairs Office      By: Wang Siyuan      Date: 2021-03-12

China, our nation, is a country with long history, rich culture and enormous classic literary works. The twenty-four solar terms is one of the most brilliant stars shining in the wisdom sky, which mirrors the ancient Chinese thought over farming culture and agricultural civilization. To further the CIEers understanding of this national treasure, our college invited Ms. Wei Li from College of Humanities and Social Development to give a lecture on given topic--- Twenty-four Solar Terms and Chinese Farmers’ Character, Feelings and Wisdom. CIE Biology Base Classes 2001,2002, 2003 and 2008 flooded into the lecture hall on the afternoon of March 11th for this feast of knowledge.

Ms Wei’s lecture was so inspiring and informative that the audience were fully fascinated by the cultural connotation of the twenty-four solar terms. She was a every skillful lecturer who knew how to raise the audience interest by associating her personal life in childhood with the professional knowledge. The students fell in love with this brilliant teachers and her lecture. In order to improve the students' understanding of the 24 solar terms, Ms. Wei Li focused her lecture on three of the solar terms --- Limit of Heat, Descent of Frost and Start of Winter. She played her-own-made VCR of Days of Solar Terms at NWAFU and explained the Chinese philosophies in the three terms: Limit of Heat reminds us of respecting the nature and ancestors; Descent of Frost reflects the circulation and the interdependence of life and death; Start of Winter implies the thoughts of compassion for all mankind, the equality of creatures, the selfless devotion for nation and family. These insights are unique and profound, which greatly enriched the students' understanding of the twenty-four solar terms. Last, Ms. Wei Li also enlightened the students to think about "What should young students learn from Chinese farmers?" and gave her own opinions.

After the lecture, the students said that they had benefited much from the lecture. Lu Yao, a student of the Biological Base Class 2008, said: “The twenty-four solar terms have been integrated into the daily lives of the people, and the men of letters in history have made many works on this topic. These essays are like fragrant flowers, making people feel scented after reading them. We like the lecture very much, because it furthers our understanding of the ancient wisdom contained in the 24 solar terms, and teaches us how to appreciate the charm of Chinese culture. It serves a double purpose."

The report of “The Twenty-Four Solar Terms and the Character, Feelings and Wisdom of Chinese Farmers” explored the broad and profound traditional Chinese culture from the twenty-four solar terms, allowing teachers and students present to deeply feel the beauty of the twenty-four solar terms and the influence of Chinese traditional culture.
