As early as the beginning of last term, we were told that CIE had changed the name to Youren College. Literally speaking, there are many differences between the two names. It is the just the new name that keeps us thinking of the meaning of it. There have been Shanheng College of The Chinese University of Hongkong, Zhongying College of Xi’an Jiaotong University. So, what would be our Youren College like? We have found no sign of celebration for its establishment, no board or banner saying it name. However, it gradually downs to us that we are now studying and living in Youren College.

Ladies’ Corner

The girls’ dormitory building is named Shuyage, implying the pursuit of graceful behaviour and rational mind. We all feel proud of the name.

The benefits from reading are always enormous and profound. On the wall of lunge in girls’ building hangs an eye-catching board saying Fembook. It is a place for female reading community, where people can found books about female celebrities or written by female writers.  Some are collected or bought, and some are donated by the students themselves, which make the book collection suits more to us.

The simple bookshelf in light colour, the small round table, the cosy cane armchairs, the comfortable sofa, the plants and the light of warm colour make the air full of the fragrance of books and knowledge. Either reading your favourite book or reflecting your life makes you relaxed and refreshed. No other way can be as inspiring as reading book in the fembook, with a cup of coffee in hand. Books of all varieties open more new windows in front of us and enrich our world with enlightening questions.

Fembook has been always aiming at building a quiet and comfortable platform for reading, which relives the students from intense study to enjoyable reading. Besides, to get more students engaged in reading, the fembook often organize regular activities.

Ladies of modern times should be confident and elegant, and the ladies at university are expected to be active and energetic. In rooms 16#101��103��105 of Youren College are the dance studio fully equipped with professional facilities, inclusive of dance floor, barre, mirror and sound system, which is used for body-shaping and dancing class. The workshop is student-managed, offering class of yoga, gym, jazz dancing and etiquette training. The training is in on every afternoon, evening and weekends, free of charge to all students who are into learn dancing and body-shaping. To get slim figure, graceful behaviour and elegant charm requires practicing body-shaping, which is meaningful and worthy of persisting.

Gentlemen’s Corner

Boy’s building is named Jinyu Xuan, deriving from the words of “embrace truth like precious stones” in Lisao(one of the works by Qu Yuan), referring to the pursuit of learned and refined quality.

On the ground four of boy’s building located the offices of teachers, where the students could pop in or out to talk to their counsellors without bothering to walk out the building. Private meeting room and mini hall greatly draw closer the teachers and the students.

What impresses us most is the Youren Lizhi Workshop, a spiritual paradise of our college. The place where the pictures about the life of Mr. Yu Youren exhibited is also the room for college organizing Chinese traditional culture lectures. Mr. Yu was a democratic revolutionist, poet, calligrapher and outstanding educator who has influenced our generation with his thinking of democracy, patriotism and innovation.

In addition, our college built up the Yuantong Work Experience Workshop. Yuantong work standards software would provide students a systematic work experience platform on which work skills, like how to set an achievable goal of work, how to work out a solution and then make detailed plans and specify each step can be learned systematically. The first time I experienced here was to organize a company accounting meeting. It was totally to me a biology major student. However, I fully grasp the skills and requirements in holding a meeting of that kind just in 30 minutes. I have to say, I was even surprised by myself at that moment. I hold firmly belief that Yuantongzhi Work Experience Workshop will enrich students work experience and enhance their understanding of social organization and different work posts. It will accelerate the shift from theory to practice, which is greatly helpful and badly needed in our country.

Another highlight goes to the Science Workshop (we normally call it college cafe). As a vessel for the communication between the teachers and the students, it shortens the distance between us and promotes the communication of academic ideas.

I have attended the science workshop twice held in the college cafe. Embraced with the fragrance of coffee while listening to the lecture given by the experts, all students felt very relaxed, which made the work more efficient. At one of the forums given by Professor Tao, he introduced to us the fundamental knowledge and methods of scientific research, with emphasis on the knowledge of cell biology, virus and embryo. When it came to overseas study and further education, Professor Tao shared his personal experience and gave the students his suggestions on how to make sensible option of mentors and majors, as well as the cultivation model.

As a student-operated business, the college cafe offered us more opportunities of employment, which we will benefit both in long and short run. It is always our preference when we would like retreat from the tiring study or when we have friend come to visit. The atmosphere there is more appealing and cosy than any other places for having talks. Actually, I went to the cafe in curiosity. The student waitress there served me the cappuccinos with a beautiful heart shape on the top, which moved me so deeply. All these I experienced make me love more the college.

There are a few small students’ corners in the college, named X Creativity Workshop. Teachers and students can take advantage of these classrooms to hold some research or cultural activities. It brings us much convenience for putting into practice our creativity.

It is said that the classroom of various sizes enriched our life and study at university. They are close so we are not bothered by the time-wasting walk, and they are quiet so we are not worried to be disturbed when are roaming in the sea of knowledge, and they are easy to apply for so we are not restrained to hold wonderful extra-curriculum activities. 

Besides, the Communist Party Workshop is now being built. At the words of Lizhi and Party Flag, I could feel a great power approaching me. I firmly believe that I will benefit more form that than what I have expected to get. I am full of hope of our college and always feel proud of being one of the members of Youren College.
