The course Improving Your English in Speaking and Listening of 2013-2014 academic year has been offered by the foreign teacher Nathan Lim, composed by eights sections of IntroductionsStory TimeLife SkillsThe WorldHealthEthicsFood and Wrap Up. Focusing on the intercultural communication, this course aims at improving students’ English speaking and listening skills in communication and expanding their international view.  Two classes with 30 students of each are mainly from CIE and Department of Foreign Languages, who are having 4 hours lesson weekly from the 8th to 15th week.

With the help of International Cooperation and Communication Division, the teaching programme had been refined by CIE and Department of Foreign Languages through negotiating with the foreign teacher long before the class started.  Mr. Nathan Lim also kept revising his teaching plan and content to cater for the demands of students and separate the class to two groups, which all contributed to the success in teaching and learning.

The teaching has a wide variety of class activities to get all students highly involved in learning. From group discussion to role play, from presentation to fun games, the situational teaching livened the atmosphere of the class and built up the students’ confidence, gaining great popularity among them.

In addition, Mr. Lim organized weekly mini conversation class for the students. The topic covers current affairs, sports, entertainment, life attitude and inner world, which encouraged the students to keep eyes on the news, daily affairs and personal inner world while practicing English speaking. It has been proved an efficient way of improving students’ abilities to think over problems, express personal ideas, know about western cultures, and learn to communicate with others.

The open teaching methods on Speaking and Listening Skill class greatly stimulated students’ creativity in learning and practicing, which also provided valuable first-hand materials for the teaching reform.
