On the evening of 23rd November, lecture 3 on Chinese Ancient Civilization was held in the Xiushan hall of north campus. Dean of A&F College of Humanities Professor Fu Shaoping was invited to give a lecture of Face and Social Life of Chinese People. Deputy Party Secretary of Enology College Mr. Liu Yusheng presided over the evening. 

Professor Fu took the examples of how face concept influence people’s life as the beginning. He quoted the views of Lin Yutang, Ming Enfu, Benedict and Fei Zhengqing to explain the face concept from the perspective of sociology. He pointed out that saving face as a distinctive characteristic of Chinese social life, had long been a rule regulating the behavior of people who were raised in this background. Then, he shared his analysis of face culture in relationship-caused dilemma. He pointed out that the unspoken rules came into being as soon as the Face was used by few people for their own interest. The justice, civilization and law of a society would exist in name only. Face culture, was a culture in which the society was ruled by people or rites, which was the biggest obstacle in the construction legal order and public spirit. Getting rid of the influence from Face and raising the awareness of citizenship were strongly recommended to the students, who were called for to make contribution to the construction of society with legal order.     

Thundering applause of appreciation constantly echoed in the hall, for Professor Fu’s and for his informative speech, easily-understood language, sharp vision and witty remarks. 

The lectures enable the students to have access to classic literature and social culture of China. On the other hand, it is a platform to carry forward the Chinese ancient civilization and new exploration in cultivating top-notch talents of grace and knowledge.
