The Construction of Organic Chemistry Continues During the Fight Against the Novel Coronavirus
From: CIE Teaching Affairs Office      By: Ma Chuan      Date: 2020-02-10

As the pilot zone of NWAFU educational reform, CIE’s role in top-notch talents cultivation has never made any pauses. As soon as the winter vocation started, CIE organized series of meetings on curriculum construction and teaching reform. The teaching team of Organic Chemistry ( English) , the first group who gave their responding at the call, set up the course teaching and learning QQ group on January the 10th. Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, CIE in no time gave response to the national and NWAFU deployment. We encouraged the teachers to made online teaching resources in advance to cope with the challenge brought by the changeable situation. The cooperation between college and course teachers guaranteed the continuity of students learning.

First, the teaching team conducted a survey on knowledge background of all CIE students. Their preventive measures paved the way for the teaching in new term. It is suggested from the survey results that 26% CIE students had been exposed to the knowledge of organic chemistry in middle school learning. Therefore, they soon made the pre-class learning plan, setting up the QQ group for students and uploading the learning materials online in advance. As the learning materials are all available to the students, the teachers organized online classes for Q&A session. With the support of CIE, the E-textbook, teaching contract, and all English glossary of new-edition textbook have been sent to the students. To the publish of this article, 4 teachers of teaching team are busy with enriching the teaching resources of PPT and online quiz and making teaching video. By using the Cengage Learning as the platform, the teaching will be conducted in the way of “ online live teaching + discussion”.

Even challenged by the unexpected affairs, CIE has never ceased improving teaching quality for the top-notch talents cultivation. Reform in curriculum teaching keeps running well since its launch. Last term witnessed 3 special symposiums for teaching quality improvement. The in-depth communication covered the topics of teaching team construction, curriculum design and reform in teaching methods. All these measures serve to make the Organic Chemistry a Gold Course of NWAFU standard.

With the reform and innovation as driving force, CIE keeps applying the appointed-teaching, focusing on the “Double First-Class” university construction and adhering to the undergraduate cultivation. We insist the connotative development and the enhance of basic course construction.

Last term, the Organic Chemistry teaching team conducted a number of questionnaire surveys such as English-only course teaching, online course teaching, and expectations for the construction of new teaching materials. Together with the members of NWAFU teaching steering group, the team organized a debriefing to collect the feedback from the students, and exchanged ideas of the current status of Biology majors in chemistry learning , the characteristics of literacy requirements, and the feasible ways to improve chemical proficiency.

The Organic Chemistry offer by CIE has always been conducted in English only. We invite the foreign teacher from Edinburgh, Uk, to co-conduct the teaching. The summer course "Life and Organic Chemistry" have been conducted for students for 4 years annually. Before the winter vacation, 100 new students of year grade 2019 had been handed out relevant course resources such as the original English textbooks.
