In order to improve the comprehensive quality of the students, and to help them make clear goal of life and study, a lecture on Humanities and Life Values were held on the evening of March 17th. Associate professor of Humanities and Social Development College, Su Yanping was invited as the lecturer.

Taking one of the hot news as the opening case, Ms. Su started her lecture on the humanities, and explained its definition, connotation and the core of humanistic spirit. “ Humanities is where the upright values root in and where the true life values start.” she said to the students. She then illustrated her ideas with classics and taught students how to improve their own humanistic literacy. By quoting the deeds of poet Yu Xiuhua and others, she told the students that no matter what situation ones were in, everyone has the right to realize their self-value. Her informative and vivid quotations greatly aroused the interest of the students and pushed the report to a climax.

Following the relationship between self-worth and social value, Ms. Su focused her lecture on the realization of self values from two aspects “reading and travelling”. She pointed out that historical readings, literary works, along with humanities knowledge are very helpful to college students majoring in natural sciences. In addition to professional knowledge, practice is also needed for the overall development. They would benefit much from the careful observation and the feelings about personal experience in survival, values and destiny under the background of the big era.

Last, Ms. Su cited the famous philosophy of The Book of Rites and combined the words with the national strategy of rural revitalization. She hoped the students would cherish the current good environment, and strive to realize their own values. In addition, the students were encouraged to carry forward the excellent cultural achievements and internalize the knowledge into personalities that all benevolent, sapiential and refined persons have.  

The students were so absorbed in the lecture and enjoyed the talking with Ms. Su. Zhang Xinyu from the Environmental Engineering Excellence Class 1901 said: “The report is so meaningful to me as it solves a lot of my confusion. I also learn from the self-reflection that there is still much room for my improvement in study and life. And I will keep refining for the realization of my life values in the society .”
