Visits of Laboratories Inject Vitality to Innovation
From: Student Affairs Office      By: Chen Fang      Date: 2020-11-24

Aimed at the central task of moral education, our college organized part of Class 2020 students to visit the laboratories in the College of Grassland Agriculture and the College of Plant Protection on November 12th. Hopefully, they will have a more comprehensive understanding of the professional laboratories in NWAFU and fully explore their interests to navigate their way through their future research experiences.

In the conference room on the second floor, Professor Hu Tianming, Dean of the College of Grassland Agriculture, commenced the activity by introducing the major curriculum, research scope and direction and attracted the students’ interests by showing the latest “weight loss” product of the College of Grassland Agriculture. Led by Professor Long Mingxiu and the College’s postgraduate students, the CIEers then moved on to visit the professional laboratories, in which they had a further understanding of the research field and the working mechanism of the experimental instruments. Also, they experienced the fun and significance of their major by observing the experimental seedlings being cultivated. In the laboratories for undergraduates, Dean Hu and Professor Long had a face-to-face communication with students, bringing them a deeper and more objective understanding of the major.

As for the College of Plant Protection, the students visited the chromatography lab, the protein analysis lab, the microscope lab as well as the artificial climate lab under the guidance of Professor Zhang Qiong. In the artificial climate lab, the professor introduced the experimental principles and the cultivated plants, allowing the students to experience the wisdom and difficulty of scientific research workers overcoming various limiting factors in controlled experiments. With the professor’s careful interpretation, the students not only learned the different uses of laboratories but also gained first impression of the basic principles of the equipment, which inspired them to enter the laboratories and conduct their own experiments in the near future. After the visit, Professor Zhang also provide enough time for students to ask questions. Alongside the Q&A, students also expressed their hope of entering the laboratories again to experience research atmosphere and learn relevant experimental knowledge.

Li Qing’ao, student of Biology, said, “When I walked into the laboratory, I found not only the bottles and jars that I had expected, but also a large number of advanced test instruments. These technical means made me more interested and confident in my future independent experimental research.”

By providing students with a first-hand experience in the laboratories, these activities of the Innovation Experimental College equipped students with professional knowledge and research interests via orientation lectures and in-site visits, thus injecting vitality to the cultivation of innovative talents.
