CIEers’ Special Summer Holiday
From: CIE Student Affairs Office      By: Wang Yanwen      Date: 2016-07-28

Diverse model and individualized program are proved effective when applied to cultivating high-quality talents with innovative spirit, practical competence and sense of social responsibility. It was also a successful practice conducted by CIE. By encouraging students to participate the scientific innovation projects and to join the social practice and internship in companies, CIE has achieved significantly in developing students’ competence and characters. When fellow students are enjoying the summer holiday in a leisure way, CIE students are fully pitching into the study, social community service or scientific research in the labs.

Experiments and research are the title songs of my Youth Album

When the noise of the hustle and bustle of large crowds is fading away, pleasant tinkling of tubes and machines from labs are more ear-catching than usual. The sweet sound actually was made by the CIE students who are concentrated on doing experiments with the guidance of their academic mentors.

Liang Wenhua, a student from Bio-science innovation class 141, who are working on the experiment of plant polysaccharide in the lab of Prof. Duan Jinyou from NWAFU College of Sciences, shared his feelings: “Research competence is always the No. 1 priority given by CIE in their talents cultivation program. With the instruction of Prof. Duan Jinyou, I successfully took the scientific research program. However, I have too many classes to attend, leaving no time for experiments. Summer holiday, to me, is a great opportunity for making up the shortage of experiment time. I find my interest greater as I adapt to the life in the lab, tiring but fruitful.” Another student Wang Xi, working in the lab of Mr. Zhao Liang of Life Science College, said: “We have plenty of time to do literature review, collect experiment materials and explore the physiological features of plants. Compared to idling the summer away, life in the labs are dull and tiring. However, it is worthwhile to strive for my dream of research.”

Dreams are fulfilled when dedicated to social community service.

Social practice is one of the ways CIE has taken to develop the students’ sense of citizenship. The students are required to study the status quo of modern agriculture, the rural life and other issues of farmers. Before the social practice activity initiated, CIE held meetings of experience sharing and mobilization cooperation. The project plans drafted by students have been refined by team advisor teachers for several times before the final version decided. Seven projects were finalized, members of which were to head for Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, Chongqing and Sichuan for survey of intangible cultural heritages, promotion of Red Revolution spirit and supporting teaching. There were two college-authorized projects, one of which consisting of two counselors and 35 honor students were to visit revolutionary sites in Yan’an and learn the spirit of serving the people wholeheartedly. The other group, WWF Qinling Mountain volunteers went to Huangguan Mountain and promoted their poverty alleviation program set up last year, establishing Honey Products Industry Cooperation, Taobao online shops and branding wrap of agricultural products.

Prioritizing the students’ individuality, developing the students’ interests, meeting the students demand and improving the students specialties are four major practices pushing forward the formation of diverse and individualized cultivation program. The number of students who take advantage of long summer holiday for Charging has been on the rise. By participating social practice, or joining research program, or attending training courses, the students remained on campus in this hottest month showed their determination of pursuing success and personal dreams. It is estimated that over 150 students chose to continue to do research in labs, 80 students joined the summer camp tour organized by fellow universities, and another 120 students composing eight groups for rural area support project, one WWF Qinling Mountain volunteer group, and one study tour group to Yan’an implemented their social service projects. In all, 81% of CIE students took part in the summer holiday activities.
