A New Mode of Class – Zheng Lifei’s Flipped ‘Advanced Mathematics’
From: Teaching Affairs Office      By: Hou Renjie & Ma Chuan      Date: 2018-03-23

To fully improve the students’ self-learning, teamwork, and presentation skills and better grasp the basics of advance mathematics, on March 21st, the students of Grade 2017 in CIE attended a flipped ‘Advanced Mathematics’ organized by teacher Zheng Lifei and the study committee.

Eight students were selected from the participants to give lectures on partial derivative. Based on active preparation and teacher Zheng’s careful instruction, the chosen students presented logical and vivid lectures regarding the definition of partial derivative, partial derivative calculation, example exercise, and partial derivative of higher order, allowing their peers to understand the theory and mathematical method. During the class, the rest of the students actively participated into class activities. In the end, teacher Zheng highlighted the learning focus and supplemented necessary knowledge to help the students comprehensively understand the concept. He also made a pertinent comment on the students’ presentations.

The students who gave lectures in the flipped class activity gained abundant experiences and realized the difficulties of teaching. Xie Xianzheng from Class 1702 said, “It is a pleasing experience to share my learning approach and passion for mathematics with my classmates. I eventually taste the sense of accomplishment today after a week preparation.” The rest of the students also found this way of teaching intriguing as the mode allowed them to immerse in the class, discover questions, and seek answers by themselves.
